About Run Dragon Run

The free browser arcade game

Run Dragon Run is a free, browser-based arcade game where you control a knight navigating a dark dungeon maze. Your goal is to eat all the glowing orbs scattered throughout the maze while avoiding four deadly dragons. The game is inspired by the classic maze-chase arcade genre and features authentic retro gameplay mechanics reimagined with a medieval knight-versus-dragon theme.

The game runs entirely in your browser using HTML5 Canvas technology. There are no downloads, no installations, no plugins, and no registration required. Simply visit rundragonrun.com and start playing instantly on any device — desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone.

Run Dragon Run is developed by PRECIKO and is completely free to play, with no hidden costs, no in-app purchases, and no paywalls.

How the Knight Moves

You control a golden knight wearing a silver medieval helmet with a red plume. The knight moves continuously in the direction you choose, stopping only when hitting a wall. You can change direction at any maze intersection by swiping (on mobile) or pressing arrow keys (on desktop).

The knight's mouth opens and closes as it moves, gobbling up orbs in its path. When you eat a power pellet — the large pulsing orbs in the four corners of the maze — your helmet flashes gold, signaling that the dragons are now vulnerable to you.

The knight moves at a consistent speed throughout each level. On higher levels, both the knight and the dragons move slightly faster, increasing the challenge.

What the Dragons Do

Four dragons patrol the maze, each with a unique artificial intelligence personality:

Blinky (Red Dragon): The most aggressive dragon. Blinky directly chases your knight's current position, always heading toward you. When most of the orbs have been eaten, Blinky enters "Cruise Elroy" mode and moves even faster, making the end of each level particularly dangerous.

Pinky (Pink Dragon): The ambusher. Pinky targets four tiles ahead of where your knight is heading, trying to cut you off. If you're moving right, Pinky aims for the spot four tiles to your right, anticipating your path.

Inky (Cyan Dragon): The flanker. Inky uses a complex targeting algorithm that combines your position with Blinky's position to attack from unexpected angles. Inky is the most unpredictable dragon and can trap you if you're not careful.

Clyde (Orange Dragon): The shy dragon. Clyde chases you when you're far away but retreats to his corner when you get close. This means Clyde is least dangerous when nearby — the opposite of what you'd expect.

All four dragons alternate between "scatter mode" (retreating to their assigned corners) and "chase mode" (actively hunting you). These mode switches happen on a timer, giving you brief windows of safety between hunting phases.

How Fire Affects Gameplay

Each dragon breathes flickering fire when it enters chase mode. The fire breath appears as a stream of orange, yellow, and red flame particles extending from the dragon's mouth in its direction of movement.

The fire breath is a visual indicator — it does not damage your knight directly. Instead, it serves as a warning system: when a dragon is breathing fire, it is actively hunting you. When there is no fire, the dragon is in scatter mode and retreating to its corner, making it safe to approach.

This fire-breathing visual cue helps you make strategic decisions. If you see fire from multiple dragons, it's time to be cautious. If the dragons have stopped breathing fire, you have a window to safely collect orbs in dangerous areas.

How Scoring Works

Run Dragon Run uses a classic arcade scoring system:

Orbs: Each small orb eaten is worth 10 points. There are 276 orbs in each level.

Power Pellets: The four large pulsing orbs in the corners are worth 50 points each. Eating a power pellet also turns all dragons blue (frightened mode) for a limited time.

Eating Dragons: When dragons are blue, you can eat them for escalating points: 200 for the first dragon, 400 for the second, 800 for the third, and 1,600 for the fourth. The counter resets each time you eat a new power pellet.

Bonus Treasure: A bonus fruit or treasure appears twice per level. The treasure type and value increase with each level:

- Level 1: Cherry (100 points)

- Level 2: Strawberry (300 points)

- Level 3: Peach (500 points)

- Level 4: Apple (700 points)

- Level 5: Melon (1,000 points)

- Level 8: Galaxian Ship (2,000 points)

- Level 9: Bell (3,000 points)

- Level 10+: Key (5,000 points)

Bonus Life: You earn an extra life when your score reaches 10,000 points.

Lives

You start the game with 3 lives. Each time a dragon catches you (when it is not in frightened blue mode), you lose one life. The game continues until you lose all your lives, at which point the game is over.

When you lose a life, the maze resets to its current state — all remaining orbs stay — but the dragons return to their starting positions in the ghost house. This gives you a brief moment of safety to reposition before the dragons emerge again.

If you earn a bonus life at 10,000 points, your life count increases by one. There is no cap on the number of lives you can accumulate.

Levels

The game has infinite levels. Each level is completed when you eat all 276 orbs in the maze. Upon completion, the maze resets with a fresh set of orbs, and the level number increases by one.

Each level features a different wall color scheme — there are 15 unique color themes that cycle as you progress through the levels. Level 1 uses blue walls, Level 2 uses red, Level 3 uses orange, and so on through pink, purple, green, gold, teal, and more.

The maze layout itself remains the same across all levels — it's the classic 28-column by 32-row dungeon with side tunnels that wrap around, a central ghost house where the dragons spawn, and four power pellets in the corners.

Difficulty Progression

Run Dragon Run gets progressively harder with each level:

Speed: Both the knight and the dragons move slightly faster on each level. By Level 10, the dragons are 16% faster than Level 1. By Level 21, they are 38% faster.

Frightened Duration: The time dragons stay blue after eating a power pellet decreases each level. Level 1 gives you 13 seconds of frightened time. By Level 5, it's down to 9 seconds. By Level 21 and beyond, power pellets stop working entirely — dragons never turn blue, making the game pure survival.

Scatter Phases: The brief safety periods where dragons retreat to their corners get shorter on higher levels. By Level 6 and above, there are only two short scatter phases before the dragons enter permanent chase mode for the rest of the level.

Cruise Elroy Mode: On higher levels, Blinky enters "Elroy mode" earlier — when more dots remain. On Level 1, Blinky speeds up when 20 dots are left. On Level 3 and above, he speeds up when 40 dots remain, making the end of each level increasingly tense.

Mobile Controls

Run Dragon Run is fully optimized for mobile phones and tablets. On mobile devices:

Swipe to Move: Swipe anywhere on the game canvas in any of the four directions (up, down, left, right) to steer the knight. The swipe gesture is responsive and works from any point on the maze.

Overlay Controls: Semi-transparent circular buttons appear at the bottom of the maze for quick access to Pause, Mute, Restart, Scores, and Help. These buttons have a frosted-glass effect and overlap the maze slightly to save screen space.

Lives Display: Your remaining lives and dot count appear as a small overlay in the top-right corner of the maze, so you always know your status without scrolling.

Sound Toggle: A small floating button in the top-left corner lets you enable or disable sound and music with a single tap.

Responsive Canvas: The maze automatically scales to fit your phone's screen, ensuring the entire maze is always visible. No scrolling, no zooming — just swipe and play.

Desktop Controls

On desktop computers and laptops, Run Dragon Run uses keyboard controls:

Arrow Keys or WASD: Use the Up, Down, Left, Right arrow keys or the W, A, S, D keys to move the knight.

Space or P: Press the Space bar or the P key to pause and resume the game.

M: Press M to toggle sound on or off.

L: Press L to open the leaderboard.

Enter: Press Enter to restart after a game over.

Control buttons (Pause, Mute, Music, Restart, Scores, Help, Report Issue) are also displayed below the maze for mouse users. Keyboard shortcut hints are shown at the bottom of the screen.

Sound and Music

Run Dragon Run features a complete audio experience generated entirely with the Web Audio API — no audio files are loaded, which means instant startup and zero bandwidth cost.

Background Music: A looping procedural dungeon theme plays in A minor during gameplay, with a bassline and arpeggiated melody. The music pauses when the game is paused or over, and resumes when you start playing.

Sound Effects:

- Orb eating: A short beep with each orb consumed

- Power pellet: A descending whoosh sound

- Eating a dragon: A rising arpeggio (four ascending notes)

- Death: A descending wail (six descending notes)

- Extra life: A celebratory fanfare

- Bonus treasure: A bright three-note chime

- Level complete: A five-note victory melody

All sounds can be toggled independently — you can mute sound effects while keeping music, or vice versa. Your sound preferences are saved in your browser and persist across sessions.

Browsers require a user interaction before playing audio. When you first load the game, a "Click to enable sound" prompt appears (or a small purple button on mobile). Click it once, and all audio works for the rest of your session.

High Scores

Your highest score is saved automatically in your browser's local storage. It persists across sessions — even if you close the browser and come back days later, your high score is still there.

You can also submit your score to the local leaderboard, which tracks the top 10 scores on your device. When the game ends, you'll see a name entry form where you can enter your name (up to 12 characters) and submit your score. The leaderboard shows your name, score, and level reached, sorted by score descending.

Note: Because scores are stored in your browser's local storage, the leaderboard is per-device. Each browser and device maintains its own separate leaderboard.
